Burks Spring Bourbon has released its second distillation and will soon launch a Select 7 Year Reserve, marking significant milestones for the revived 219-year-old Kentucky bourbon brand.

A historic Kentucky bourbon brand returns to market with expanded distribution and a limited-edition aged expression coming this summer.

Burks Spring Bourbon has released its second distillation and will soon launch a Select 7 Year Reserve, marking significant milestones for the revived 200+-year-old Kentucky bourbon brand. The company announced on July 18 that bottles are now available at nearly 50 stores throughout Louisville and surrounding areas, including the Kentucky Artisan Distillery gift shop.

The expansion follows the brand’s limited initial release in April 2024, when Dick Burks, great-great-great grandson of founder Charles Burks, reintroduced the family recipe after more than a century’s absence from shelves.

Burks Spring Bourbon Expands Kentucky Distribution

The second distillation represents a major step forward for the heritage brand, which operated from 1805 to 1919 before Prohibition forced its closure. Kentucky Artisan Distillery, Burks Spring’s production partner, now sells bottles directly to consumers at their gift shop, joining dozens of retailers across the Louisville metro area.

The original Burks Spring Distillery produced bottled-in-bond Kentucky straight bourbon whiskies, including Old Happy Hollow and Burks Spring Genuine Sour Mash. The historic distillery building still stands on property now owned by Maker’s Mark in Loretto, Kentucky.

“It’s my pleasure to share this Burks family recipe that was inspired by my great-great-great grandfather over 200 years ago,” said Dick Burks. “I take great pride in continuing the family bourbon tradition whose original mission in life was to heal the sick, produce mirth, laughter, and good fellowship.”

Limited Burks Spring Bourbon Reserve Coming Summer 2025

The Select 7 Year Reserve will offer bourbon enthusiasts a chance to taste a more mature expression of the Burks Spring recipe. The company plans to announce participating retailers and additional details about the limited release in the coming weeks through their website.

The standard Burks Spring Bourbon features a high-rye mash bill inspired by the historic recipe. The 100-proof bourbon comes in 750ml bottles, though pricing information was not included in the announcement.

Charles Burks began distilling on his Hardin Creek farm at the turn of the 19th century, establishing what would become a 115-year family operation. The distillery changed hands several times after Prohibition before Dick Burks decided in 2018 to revive the brand using traditional distilling methods.

The return of Burks Spring Bourbon adds another chapter to Kentucky’s bourbon renaissance, as historic brands reclaim their place alongside modern craft distilleries. With expanded distribution and an aged reserve expression on the horizon, the Burks family legacy continues to evolve while honoring its roots in Kentucky’s bourbon heritage.
